The European Government Are Targeted By Russian Hackers Just Before The May Election

Cybersecurity firm FireEye reported that Russian Hackers are targeting the European government systems right before the EU parliament election.

FireEye discovered that two state-sponsored hacking groups, APT28 and Sandworm, used a tactic labeled spearphishing (sending out emails designed to look like they’re similar from a trusted party) to obtain important information. European government officials were sent emails with links to websites that appeared to be authentic.

The hacking group APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, is believed to be the same organization behind the 2016 Democratic National Convention hack. The other group Sandworm has also been believed to be behind the NotPeya ransomware attack.

Senior manager of cyber espionage analysis at FireEye, Benjamin Read, stated "The groups could be trying to gain access to the targeted networks in order to gather information that will allow Russia to make more informed political decisions, or it could be gearing up to leak data that would be damaging for a particular political party or candidate ahead of the European elections."
